We've been down this road far too often with this one company, and we've highlighted each sensitive issue after another (the latest are here, here). Nothing this bad is by accident. And it's absurd to think the government is going to save you. Where were they the past 14 years? Whether it's facebook, or any other place attempting to prostitute your information, our advice couldn't be more easy:
Don't yield an inch
Don't yield an inch
Forget annoying ads, this is how social engineering works (which then leads to identity theft followed by scam recruitment and credit fraud). And the problem is going to get much worse before it gets better. The gangs in technology don't care about you, if you are merely a careless product. You can and must respect yourself, by fighting harder for yourself. For example, see how our settings on facebook have always been since joining many years ago. Do your part and stop imparting to strangers or institutions any information about yourself that is no one's business, such as your gender, birthdate, family, etc.
Parents in particular should really know better.
